Penny ‘on the move’ to a Brighter Future

From humble beginnings in Hedgeley, Northumberland in 1994, Penny Petroleum is still family owned and led by its founder, David Penny. The business has gone from strength to strength since 1994 and last year was announced as the fifth largest petrol forecourt retailer in the UK.

Still holding family values at its core, the company regularly researches colleagues to better understand their motives and actions while at work and uses their views to help develop a brighter future for everyone. Part of this research looks at pay/benefits; to gather colleague feedback on whether they feel fairly rewarded for their work.

Committed to being one of the highest-paying petrol forecourt retailers, Penny Petroleum is pleased to announce a further pay increase for all colleagues with a Penny Petroleum contract, to £12 per hour. Penny Petroleum is determined to remain an ‘above living wage’ employer and this increase also means that in the past year average pay at Penny Petroleum has lifted by some 20%. That’s quite an uplift, which, from feedback, has gone some way to helping colleagues navigate the recent cost-of-living crisis.

“We are incredibly proud of our team. This increase, when packaged with the other benefits we offer, is tough to rival and helps us to stay competitive in a tight labour market. We want our colleagues to remain loyal, so we value their hard work, appreciate their efforts and make sure everyone shares the successes”, said Tim Coid, Penny Petroleum’s Human Resources Business Partner. “That’s why we have also revamped our Site Manager bonus to allow managers to earn up to an additional 10% of their salary as a bonus when they hit target”.

Colleagues at Penny Petroleum also benefit from an employee package, which includes the ‘PennyWise’ platform (with thousands of money-saving options which can save the average person £1500 per annum), a partnership with GroceryAid (which provides colleagues with practical, financial, and emotional support) plus a 20% internal staff discount, along with lots of other benefits associated with being part of such a large family.

Said David Penny, founder “For the Penny family, diversification is key. We embrace change and move forward with it. We are well and truly ‘on the move’ and we recognise that staff recruitment, retention and reward are integral to our progression to become the ultimate convenience.”

There is little doubt that Penny Petroleum is moving forward with its plan, which also aims to deliver turnover in excess of £500 million, working with over 1000 colleagues serving over 100 filling stations, hotels, individual car wash sites, a bakery and a farm shop!
